Transport regulations for batteries - what has to be considered

Batteries are dangerous goods. When transporting batteries, various regulations of transport law must therefore be observed. The regulations are extensive and not always easy to understand. The ZVEI has therefore summarized the most important regulations from ADR and IATA in various leaflets.

In detail, it concerns the following leaflets:

Leaflet No. 5 (only in German):

Transport of batteries (2019)

(The "ZVEI standard reference document" for the transport of lead and lithium batteries, as well as their raw materials)

Leaflet No. 36:

Shipping of lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries in / with devices (2019)

Batteries in air traffic: regulations for passengers and crew members

The International Air Transport Association IATA publishes the current regulations for "dangerous goods" that may be carried by passengers or crew members on its website (Table 2.3 A of the Dangerous Goods Regulations). These include regulations for certain batteries (including accumulators and power banks) that apply to passengers and crew members. In addition to that, IATA regularly publishes an overview of dangerous goods which may only be carried in checked-in or hand luggage under specified conditions. The current regulations for batteries carried by passengers are available in English at
