Low fire hazard cables improve safety

Cables that are permanently installed in buildings have been subject to the European Construction Products Regulation since 1 July 2017 and are classified into European classes with regard to their reaction to fire performance.

Cables that are permanently installed in buildings have been subject to the European Construction Products Regulation (CPR) since 1 July 2017. They are classified according to their reaction to fire performance in uniform European classes. Flame Retardency, smoke production and the use of halogen-free materials are the main aspects that are considered. Depending on the result of the specified fire testing, cables can reach class Eca up to B2ca.

The requirements for cables are laid down in the harmonized standard hEN 50575:2014 "Power, control and communications cables - Cables for general applications in construction works subject to reaction to fire requirements".

These cables must be provided with a CE marking according to The CPR and a Declaration of Performance (DoP).

In order to achieve greater safety in the event of fire, the cable industry recommends the use of cables in relation to the respective Safety requirements of the building.

Further information on cables under the Construction Products Regulation can be found in the publications of the division “The German Cable Makers' Association”.
