Intelligent lighting control is at the front of smart home applications. According to a representative consumer survey by ZVEI, one in five Germans already uses networked functions at home. Around 40 percent of the users control outdoor and indoor lighting - this makes lighting the frontrunner, followed by heating control.
The survey also shows that interest in smart home applications is growing from year to year. Compared to the previous year, the number of users rose by five percent in 2017. This represents an increase of nine percent in the young target group of 14 to 35-year-olds ("millennials") - an increase of 50 percent. The end of the dynamics of the smart home market is far from being reached. A good third of those surveyed, who have not yet used a smart home application, believe that future use is likely to very likely. As consumer and home electronic products become increasingly integrated with building installation and automation applications and the associated importance of the Internet of Things and Services (IoT), this number should continue to rise in the coming years.
Positive impulses can be expected in this environment above all through voice control, a function that has quickly gained favour with consumers: 20 percent of those surveyed - 30 percent of the Millennials - already use voice control. Practically one in five controls their smart home applications by voice command. Mobile devices such as smartphones and televisions are the leaders in the use of voice control. Operation via voice control is simple, practical and convenient.
On behalf of the ZVEI, the market research institute GfK SE conducted an online survey of 2,005 people in Germany aged 14 and over in autumn 2017. The study focused on the acceptance and use of new technologies in the field of consumer electronics.
