Study: Power Grids 2030+
On the road to climate neutrality in 2045, the "climate neutral grid" will be the key element in the energy system. This grid must ensure the connection of a rapidly growing number of decentralised renewable energy sources with an equally rapidly growing number of new electrified consumers across all voltage levels and at the same time provide services for new business models of various market participants. This requires a transformation of the entire electricity system and leads to completely new demands on the electricity grid and its operators.
The need for large-scale grid expansion at all voltage levels and the elimination of the related obstacles is absolutely indisputable. In particular, this study asks whether the electricity grids are prepared for the requirements of a climate neutral grid with the current framework conditions for efficient grid operation. The clear answer to this is no.
What capabilities and also services this will require, and what regulatory requirements are necessary to achieve this, is the main subject of this study.
The most important thing now is to be quick: in order to make these grid capabilities available by 2030 at the latest, it is crucial that the adjustment and further development of the regulatory framework are driven forward promptly.
