The European internal market is a success story. An important step to this success was the prohibition of quantitative import restrictions and all “measures having equivalent effect” between the member states.

“Measures having equivalent effect” also include different safety and environmental regulations. In addition to the technical design, the legitimate marketability is also affected by approval procedures, reporting and documentation requirements. Despite the removal of customs borders, trade barriers still exist.
