Robustness Validation is a modern qualification approach for Electronic Devices, Modules and Systems.

The new 'test to fail' qualification approach (instead of a 'test-to-pass'), is a paradigm shift from 'Fit for Standard' to 'Fit for Application'. Robustness Validation generates knowledge on the relevant component failure mechanisms that may occur at the boundaries of the specification limits. Therefore ECUs could be designed with known robustness margins combined with cost and time saving potentials.

More than 50 companies and members of

  • ZVEI German Electro and Digital Industry Association,
  • SAE Int. Automotive Electronic Syst. Reliability Standards Committee,
  • AEC Automotive Electronics Council and
  • JSAE Japanese Society of Automotive Engineers

formed a joint task force to settle a new comprehensive qualification Method.

A coherent series of four Handbooks is completed by an Implementation Guideline, a Questionnaire as well as several Knowledge Matrices and Spreadsheets for easy application.
